Ethics Class

Dear all,

The Ethics class on Thursday (21/04/2011) is from 4 to 5 PM at the JBLT.

Each Posting will have one ethical issue to present. Please find one case and have a discussion prepared (more emphasis on the discussion as requested by Dato' Siva). Attendance is compulsory.

  1. OrthopaedicsBeneficence
  2. Psychiatry - Autonomy
  3. Obstetrics - Social Justice
  4. PaediatricsNon-maleficence
Please have presentations prepared for the day and your discussions ready.

Social justice generally refers to the idea of creating a society or institution that is based on the principles of equality and solidarity, that understands and values human rights, and that recognizes the dignity of every human being.

Autonomy is the “personal rule of the self that is free from both controlling interferences by others and from personal limitations that prevent meaningful choice.”  Autonomous individuals act intentionally, with understanding, and without controlling influences.

Beneficence is action that is done for the benefit of others. Beneficent actions can be taken to help prevent or remove harms or to simply improve the situation of others.

Non-maleficence means to “do no harm.” Physicians must refrain from providing ineffective treatments or acting with malice toward patients.  This principle, however, offers little useful guidance to physicians since many beneficial therapies also have serious risks.  The pertinent ethical issue is whether the benefits outweigh the burdens.

Loads of love and cheers,
Zia
