Dato' Siva's new mentees for Obs

Attention to all Dato' Siva's new mentees for Obstetrics posting:

Muna and Masisi have been assigned to teach all of you briefly about the way Dato' wants his mentees to prepare and submit their assignments.

1) Unlike other Obs students who are allowed to submit their reports and summaries on Mondays of the subsequent weeks (e.g. Week 1 case summary to be submitted on Monday of Week 2 etc.), Dato's mentees have to submit on Friday of the same week (e.g. Week 1 Case Summary to be submitted on Friday of Week 1)

2) Unlike before, all learning issues for case summaries, case reports and progress reports must NOT be taken from textbooks. They must come from CURRENT JOURNALS (only journals in the past 3 years and above: from 2008-2011). Make full use of library journal databases. Don't forget to put citations as footnotes.

3) Besides submitting a case summary and an on-call report each Friday, each of you has to submit an extra WEEKLY PROGRESS REPORT every Friday. Contact Muna or Masisi for a sample of the progress report and how to write it. Again, all learning issues should be based on current journals. Among the contents are:
  1. Cases clerked this week + 1 learning issue (based on one of the cases)
  2. Cases presented/discussed this week + 1 learning issue (based on one of the cases)
  3. Procedures/surgeris seen this week + brief explanation about them
  4. Seminars and classroom learning of the week + optional discussion on the topics
  5. Case write-ups timeline (a plan in advance on what you are going to write about for your next case summary/report)
  6. Logbook entry and attendance: a description of what you have noted in your logbooks and a reflection on your attendance of every ward round/class/seminar/labour room posting.
4) Make sure you proofread your reports and summaries. Check spelling and grammar, make sure they are correct. Don't use abnormal margination. 'Justify' your text.

5) Do NOT ever send your case reports and summaries later than Friday.

6) Use the ETHICS MODEL in writing your ethical issue discussion. There will be a session on Ethics and Professionalism with Dato' Siva. Use the handouts to guide you on how to use the Ethics Model to write your ethical issue discussion for the case summary.

Contact Muna or Masisi if you have any queries or need of help. Dato' Siva is a very good mentor, he will make sure you gain and apply as much knowledge and experience as possible in this very short but interesting 5-week posting.

Regards,
Muna Ghoz
