We went to speak to Dr VS today about a few things:
1) Gallstone Ileus
According to Dr VS, gallstone ileus means the impaction of a gallstone in a tubular structure, which might not necessarily be the small intestine (or ileum), that causes a spasm. Therefore, it can also occur in the bile duct. He said that "ileus" actually refers to a tubular structure, and does not specifically refer to the ileum or any part of the small intestine.
2) Pathology Lab Session
On Monday (11/05), the lab session had a clash with CSU session 3. Therefore, Dr VS saw very few students at the beginning of the lab, and he left early.
On Wednesday (13/05), the lab session was unguided--no lecturer showed up. What happened was that Dr AT actually asked to swap with Dr VS, but there was some miscommunication and neither one of them showed up to guide the lab session.
As a result, Dr VS decided to organize a replacement lab session on MONDAY, 18th of May 2009, from 4-5pm, at the Pathology lab (4th floor) for the students in groups D8 - L1. Please mark down this date!
3) Lectures by Dr VS
We talked to Dr VS about certain issues brought up by some of our batchmates regarding his lecture content, style, etc, namely:
- skipping/ignoring information on slides
- not explaining slides thoroughly
- no continuity in slides w.r.t. lecture content
- poor pre-lecture preparation
As such, we have brainstormed with him and come up with a few ways to improve his lectures:
- mentioning/touching on all and any information presented on slides
- to place emphasis on information that is more clinically relevant i.e. more likely to be examined in ICAs and EOSes
- to have a better flow in his presentation of the topic
- to include guiding questions/case studies in the lecture
- to include more specific "lecture objectives"
So, beloved batchmates, patience is a virtue!! Please give him a chance to improve. :)) He was very understanding and took our input as "very good constructive criticism" (we quote him directly).
